Spokeo Has Your Personal Info

There is a website called Spokeo.com that has posted personal info about you that you may not care for just anyone to see. (There are probably other website like this but this one I saw on CBS Atlanta noon news 2011-01-05 and decided I’d delete my info)

I went to look an sure enough there I was.
Now this site ain’t perfect, because it shows me with one kid. I SWEAR that kid has never been proven in court! ;-)

I’m really not all that paranoid about stuff like this being out there about me, because I imagine there are other sites like this, but since CBS is telling the world its there, I figure I’ll take myself off this one!

You can remove yourself by doing the following: (At least it appears to work)

1- Go to http://www.spokeo.com
2- In the top search window type in your name, city and state. If your name is common you may get more listings than just for yourself.
3- After you find your “Spokeo Profile” go to the top and select and copy the URL for your profile page.
5- With the URL copied, go to the bottom of your profile page and click on “Privacy.”
6- When the new window opens (it can be slow) you’ll see a place to “paste” the URL you copied. You also have to give an email address so they can send you a verification that you do want the profile for you removed. I used a “throw away” email address so as to not confirm anything about me they may not already know.
MORE ON #6: since you can create any email address you want to have the removal verification sent to, you could go remove the profile for friends or family that don’t “do” computers! i.e. like elderly parents
7- You’ll then get a window telling you to check your email to complete the cancellation process.
8- When the email comes there will be a link to click on to finish the process.

It appears to have worked to remove my listing, but I imagine I’ll check from time to time to see if I’m back on.
I can provide more detailed instructions for the computer and/or internet “challenged” out there if you need it!
